4DescriptionAbstract Activated carbons prepared by chemical activation of corn cobs and coffee husks, using H3PO4 were characterized for its moisture content, bulk density, pH of zero point charge (pHpcz) and pH. Batch adsorption of catechol from aqueous solution using the characterized activated carbons was investigated. The adsorption properties were studied in terms of pH, equilibrium time, initial concentration (C0: 10-110 mg/L) and adsorbent mass. The experimental data fitted well the pseudo second order kinetic model while the equilibrium isotherm data fitted the Langmuir model. The results indicate that activated carbons obtained from the chemical activation of corn cobs and coffee husks are suitable adsorbents for the removal of catechol from aqueous solution.
