4DescriptionAbstract The kinetics of anation of cis-[Cr(C2O4) 2 (H2O) 2]- by ampicillin have been investigated in aqueous medium over the range 3.0 ≤ pH ≤ 5.0, 1.50x10-2mol dm-3 ≤ [AMP] ≤ 4.50x10-2 mol dm-3, I = 0.3 mol dm-3 (KNO3) and at temperature 35 oC ≤ t ≤ 50 oC. The reaction takes place through an Ia mechanism. The rate of reaction is found to increase with increase in [H+] and [AMP-Na]. The activation parameters ΔH and ΔS are found to be 42.4±2.5 and -176.6±8.1 respectively. The negative values of activation entropies (ΔS) indicate a more ordered activated complex than the reactants and the reactions are slow. The positive values of activation enthalpy (ΔH) shows that the decomposition process is endothermic. The product was isolated as [Cr2 (C2O4)4 (AMP)].2H2O which was confirmed by FTIR and AAS method. The antimicrobacterial activities of the complex was tested against some kind of bacteria comparable with the ampicillin free drug.
