4 | Description | Abstract | Abstract: Ultrasonic velocities (u) and densities (ρ) of Me4NClO4, Et4NClO4 Pr4NClO4, Bu4NClO4 and Bu4NBPh4 were measured at different salt concentrations in the range
(30-500)x10-4 mol kg-1 in binary mixtures of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and methanol (MeOH) containing 0, 20, 40, 50, 60, 80 and 100 mol% methanol at 298.15 K. The isentropic compressibilities (Ks) and apparent molal isentropic compressibilities (Ks, φ) of different salts in the binary solvent mixtures were calculated from ultrasonic velocity and density values. The apparent molal isentropic compressibilities(Kos,φ) of the salts were split into the contributions of individual ions (Kos, φ)±. The ionic apparent molal isentropic compressibilities (Kos, φ)± of Bu4N+ and Ph4B- are found to be positive which show strong solvophobic interactions in DMSO and in DMSO+MeOH mixtures over the entire solvent composition range. The negative values of Me4N+ and Et4N+ ions have show strong structural effects which arise due to solute-solvent interactions in MeOH rich region of mixtures. The extent of solvation of tetraalkylammonium ions has been found to be in the order Me4 N+ > Et4 N+ > Pr4 N+ > Bu4 N+ in DMSO, MeOH and their binary mixtures
