4DescriptionAbstract Kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of L-histidine (His) by hexachloroiridate(IV) was studied spectrophotometrically at 30 oC and at pH 4.2. The reaction was followed by measuring the absorbance of hexachloroiridate(IV) at 487 nm. The reaction was found to be first order each in [IrCl62-] and [L-histidine]. Increase in pH resulted in increase in rate and increase in ionic strength had negligible effect on the rate of the reaction. Stoichiometry of the reaction between the substrate and oxidant was found to be 1:2. Histidine aldehyde was confirmed to be the main product of oxidation by its IR and mass spectra. A plausible mechanism was proposed and the rate law derived.
