4DescriptionAbstract Naravelia zeylanica belongs to Ranunculaceae. It is small genus of woody climber distributed in Himalayas. Roots tuberous, leaves with two opposite ovate, cordate leaflets and a terminal 3-branched tendril; flowers with a pleasant scent, achnes red with long feathery styles. Naravelia zeylanica is used as an astringent and as an anti-inflammatory. It is also used for colic, headache, inflammation, rheumatic pain, wounds and ulcers, intestinal worms, leprosy and skin diseases. The stems are used as tooth sticks to cure toothache. In the present study, the ethanolic extract of the chosen plant was divided into two parts; one part of the extract was treated with 20% sodium hydroxide, extracted with ether, organic layer was separated and labelled as ether layer I. The other part of the ethanolic extract was acidified with 4N hydrochloric acid, extracted with ether, organic layer was separated and labelled as ether layer III. Using preparative thin layer chromatography, NZ 1 a pale yellow solid was isolated with solvent ratio chloroform: benzene (6:4) and melting point as 165.6 oC. The isolated compound was characterized with UV-Vis., Infrared (IR), Mass, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy studies. The isolated compound was found to be 5-({[3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl) tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yl]oxy}methyl) dihydrofuran-2(3H)-one.
