4DescriptionAbstract An efficient method for the one-pot synthesis of 14-alkyl or aryl-14H-dibenzo[a,j]xanthenes, by the condensation of aldehydes and β-naphthol under solvent free conditions using silica supported copper(II) sulphate, has been described. This strategy is further extended to three component coupling of aldehydes, β-naphthol and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds for the synthesis of 12-aryl-8,9,10,12-tetrahydrobenzo[a]xanthen-11-one derivatives. The present catalytic system is recyclable and can be reused without greater loss of reactivity.
